Looking Inward, Looking Out
Mixed media on reclaimed cabinet door
Jessica Redford is a local artist and teacher at Rainbow Mountain Children’s School. This is Jessica’s third year contributing her work to the Doors of Asheville benefit auction. She and her husband (also a contributing artist) have a great respect for the work that MHO and the many great nonprofits in Asheville are doing for us all each day. Jessica’s paintings and photography combine surreal imagery and social commentary. Fabricated out of a singular notion they build slowly, allowing the viewer to keep pace and contribute to the conversation, rather than feeling lectured to. They can be whimsical, or dark, depending on your point of view, though mostly they are something in between.
This piece “Looking Inward, Looking Out” was produced on a reclaimed kitchen cabinet door, reminding the viewer that it is not only the front door of a home which the inhabitants may need help opening. There are many doors in every city, and each one we come to is a new opportunity for looking inward, at our new surroundings, at ourselves in this new space; and looking out, at the world we are leaving, and the changes we have made.
