Encaustic
Christine Dougherty is an artist working in Asheville's River Arts District. She paints landscapes in oils and pastels, preferring to work on location, "en plein air". Her style can be described as loose realism, as she is focused not only on accurate representation, but vibrant color interpretation as well.
Her most recent medium has been encaustics, or painting with pigmented beeswax. She received a Regional Artist Project Grant from the North Carolina and Asheville Area Arts Councils, and exploring encaustic as a new medium was part of that project. She is also using bees as her subject matter, while trying to raise awareness of the severe decline in honeybee populations. She became interested in the subject after becoming a beekeeper, and having also been fascinated with encaustics, decided she could combine the two interests.
After acquiring a B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art and Design, she was drawn to the mountains of western North Carolina. Having lived in the area now for many years, she is very involved in the outdoors, enjoying whitewater kayaking, hiking, and camping. These activities have given her an acute appreciation of the beauty of the area, which she attempts to capture in her art.
