Julia C. Burr
The Essentials
Steel, glass, stone, wood
Julia won her first exterior sculpture commission while in undergraduate school at the University of Tennessee, and out of 20,000 students, she was the first art student to be awarded “Most Professional Promise.” Julia received her MFA from California School of the Arts. Julia has been featured on PBS UNCTV North Carolina Now and in Laurel Magazine, and in 2004 she was named Artist of the Year by Rapid River Magazine.
Being a long time voyeur of human nature, Julia has become aware of the intense need to find our fit in the world. In incremental realizations, Julia discovered that it is more than a need, it is instinctual. In order to weave her way through the complexities of alienation and inclusion, Julia simplifies both the subject and the situation in an attempt to distill the essence of a moment in time. Steel offers the structural strength to eliminate all extraneous elements from the human form until it is only a suggestion, a simple 3D drawing almost as primitive as the instinct itself. In this piece, Julia portrays a simple portrait of what should be an attainable goal for all.
