Bear Paws

Susan Webb Lee

Bear Paws
Acrylic on Wooden Door

Susan Webb Lee has been making one-of-a-kind quilts since the late 1970’s. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and her work is included in public and private collections in the US and Europe. Susan was recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts and the Southern Arts Federation.  After completing graduate courses in surface design, Susan started producing hand-painted quilts and now uses hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics into most of her quilt work. Susan focuses on color and relationship of shapes, however she does not begin with a preconceived design. Instead, she allows each color and shape dictate what the adjacent color and shape should be. The quilts can be interpreted in various ways, so each person can see something unique, whether it is the complexity of the design or subtle color gradations in the hand-dyed cloth.

The images on this door are traditional quilt patterns. The bear's paw design is in the center of the top panel, and an English flower pattern is in the lower panel. A "sawtooth" pattern is used as a border around the entire door.
