Tom’s paintings delve into the lesser-explored fields of alternative science, history and archaeology. These give us a different view of humanity because alternative science sees man as connected to the universe. It unifies creation and evolution into a coherent whole.
Tom’s work is an exploration of material and texture, color, or lack thereof. He explores the relationship between light and dark, the material and the immaterial, the tangible and the purely theoretical. Painting, as a process, exists to expand human consciousness, a notion that figures heavily in Tom’s studies and his work. Color and texture give the illusion of an aged slice of earth.
This piece was inspired by the river in the Joyce Kilmer forest, by the look and the "feel" of the river bottom, with its smooth rocks and fine sand. These same materials have been used in this piece. The piece also reminds me of the course of nature, turning the rough, coarse land into smooth surfaces by erosion, either by wind or in this case by water. These processes are sort of implied in this piece as the eye follows from left to right. Extreme age is also something that this piece communicates.
