After 25 years at Warren Wilson College, Virginia retired from college administration to pursue music and art. Virginia is a self-taught artist who benefited from a very good art history course and studio art course. She believes that arts are essential to everyone, not just as refreshing antidotes to repetitive routine, but as a means of opening our minds, our hearts, our souls to new possibilities in a world whose troubles cannot be resolved unless our thoughts and behaviors “change direction” in creative and compassionate ways. Virginia’s interest in negative spaces and in natural forms has led to a fascination with interactive kinetic paper art (pop-ups) that she creates and house in hinged frames and decorative cabinets. Each pop-up folds out into 3 dimensions and back again, changing the effects of light, shadow, color and spatial relation, and, of course, the element of surprise.
