Ashley Barber
The Ascendance of Kaguya-hime
Oil painting on full sized door
Ashley Barber has studied figure drawing since she was nine. After studying interior architecture at UNC Greensboro for two years she received a B.A. with a concentration in sculpture from UNC Charlotte. Her major focus has remained on figurative work through painting, sculpture and drawing.
The Ascendance of Kaguya-hime was inspired by a 10th century Japanese folk tale read to Barber as a child by her Japanese mother. The story of Kaguya-hime embraces themes of birth and ascendance as well as stories of good fortune and new beginnings. Barber says, “Life has many fortunes and misfortunes that can tie themselves together in one story. Affordable housing for many people could be the beginning to a fortunate life and a new story. Each family deserves to make their story have a happy ending. Affordable housing is a wonderful beginning.”
