It was after several years as a construction welder and iron worker that Catherine began to create her own pieces in copper as owner of Haw Creek Forge, now a leading producer of whimsical sculptures for the garden. She is now creating beautiful objects for the wall as Catherine Murphy Designs.
“I have been inspired by the technical possibilities and the fluid characteristics of copper to create these wall pieces. Using the technique of ‘fold forming,’ I am able to fold, hammer, stretch, compress and otherwise manipulate the copper with stunning results. The colors result from a combination of heat, chemicals and various surface treatments. Creating this work invokes in me certain feelings of passion and connectedness and a sense of possibilities that I hope are shared with the viewer.”
