To pursue a career in art requires a willingness to share the experience of living. I approach art making as an on-going method of inquiry, and I make art intended to draw attention to ideas, situations and process – not necessarily the art object itself. My attraction to photography is based on contradictions. The unsurpassed detail and intrinsically implied veracity of the photograph fascinate me, yet I manipulate both to create a unique personal statement within a reproducible medium.
I cite Dadaist collage, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and the Bauhaus tradition of experimentation as major influences. Alternative photographic techniques and digital are particularly amenable to the introduction of other media and I frequently incorporate several forms of media into one piece. I’m very interested in exploring the relationships and new meanings created by the simultaneous viewing of disparate imagery. Perhaps it is no surprise that I gravitated to a medium of transparency, as I often appropriate information, juxtapose layers of images and integrate text into much of my photographic work.
