Door of New Orleans
Porcelain sepia phototransfer tile collage

Laura began college as an art history major in 1991.  After two years’ study at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, she transferred to Tulane University Architecture School in New Orleans.  Early on, a friend convinced her to take a ceramics class and she was hooked.  She continued to take ceramics and sculpture electives throughout school, finishing with a Master of Architecture in 1998.  After graduation, she moved to Baltimore where she attended the Maryland Institute College of Art.  There she became familiar with the computer graphics programs and Adobe Photoshop that she uses extensively in her current work.

“I have always been drawn to collage.  I first made collages from magazine clippings, then enjoyed constructing wild ones on the computer.  The ceramic medium brings yet another dimension to collage.  I love the graphic quality achieved by layering images on an earthy ceramic surface.  I do this by creating my own decals in Photoshop and firing them into the glaze.  Carrying the design through the adjacent tiles and carving them emphasizes the overall graphic effect.”
