Annie Cicale
The Reverse Side
Enamel paint on hollow core door with gold leaf over acrylic gilder’s size and chopmark made from linoleum block plate
The world of books and writing has captivated Annie Cicale since she was a child. After a short career as a chemical engineer, she turned to the visual arts, specializing in painting, printmaking and drawing. The visual qualities of writing became her subject matter when she discovered the expressive power of calligraphic forms, bringing a visual expression to the words to expand their meaning. She incorporates both abstract and illustrative imagery into her paintings.
Annie has an MFA in graphic design and teaches calligraphy, drawing and painting for calligraphy guilds throughout the United States and Canada, and has taught at most of the international calligraphy conferences. Her travels to Europe and Asia have expanded her vision of calligraphic form. She has had numerous one-person exhibitions of her work and is the author of The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering, a 2004 publication of Lark Books.
