Christine Dougherty
Corner Scene
Oil on canvas
Dougherty has captured a sunny morning scene of the corner of College and Spruce Streets. Some of Asheville’s beautiful, historic architecture is visible in the background with a small grove of trees that have been removed to make way for the new Pack Square Park.
At first glance, my paintings may not appear to be anything but a representation of the landscape. However, they are much more than that. They are a dialogue with my surroundings, a visual story of how I feel about the landscape and an invitation for the viewer to engage with nature. I feel that my purpose as an artist is to be an interpreter, and show people something from a new perspective. When I go out with my paints and directly invoke the power of what I am seeing, I am really moved by the outrageous beauty that is all around us. I want the viewer of my work to be moved as well. I let the brush be my storyteller.
