Study of an Old Man’s Head
Charcoal and conte,
a drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base
The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas (FALC) is pleased to be a part of the 2008 Doors of Asheville. FALC is housed in a building in the River Arts District which was renovated and leased to us by MHO so we clearly understand the benefits and opportunities that MHO provides. This door project brings needed dollars as well as recognition to one of MHOs many community programs. To be a part of this project not only provides an avenue for FALC to give back to MHO and our community at large but also provides a learning opportunity for our students and allows FALC to share its work with a wider audience.
FALC is a non-profit art school; this door is a collaboration of faculty, students and staff. The piece was chosen by the participants in the community outreach class and is being overseen by senior faculty member, Michael Smith. The piece is titled "Study of An Old Man's Head" – Albrecht Durer's version is a brush drawing on paper with a dark ground, heightened with white. Drawn on a journey in the Netherlands in 1521.
In this photograph the work on the left is a scaled and sized version of the original piece. The door was prepared with gesso in order to take the various mediums and then graphed. The piece is now being carefully drawn on the door in charcoal and conte.
