Silent Elevator Exchange
Pigment, graphite, ink, acrylic and epoxy resin on panel

Julie Armbruster is a mixed media painter creating a catalogue of images that relate to her perceptions.  Images are repeated, developing conclusions that point to the unnatural and destructive behavior of humanity, whose collective view insists being the exception to the laws of nature.  Her most recent work delves further into the imaginative world of the individual characters and their personal struggle to understand their unique potential while making sense of their social drama.

The characters are disturbed, yet are set in a familiar illustrative context.  The combination of layered materials and concentrated attention inextricably link the process of automatic drawing and repetition to the preoccupation with finding meaning and satisfaction in life.  Her characters are formed from daily social interactions and experience and are fed by her own paranoia and curiosity.  Often befuddled and dreaming, her characters are embalmed in a resin film applied to the surface.

Seventh floor!  The elevator door opens and the four characters assume their positions.  The Mothman frowns thinking of his recent purchase of the basic staples that his doctor recommended for weight loss.  How is he going to make broccoli, light milk and vinegar taste good?  The elevator operator looks incredulously at the small “dog” leaving the elevator and wonders if it is almost time for a break.  The Swizz senses the operator’s dissatisfaction and takes it personally.  Brady exits on their floor completely oblivious to the thoughts of the other passengers.
