Skaill House Door – Orkney Islands, Scotland
Black & white photograph, matted & framed

John photographs using a large format camera and black and white film. His work has been exhibited at Tryon’s Upstairs Gallery Photography Biennial shows, Southeastern Photography Invitational at Asheville’s Blue Spiral 1, 2002, Blue Spiral 1’s Scenic Overlook: Blue Ridge Parkway, 2004 & 2007 and UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library, 2005.  His images are in numerous private collections and are available for purchase at Asheville’s Blue Spiral 1.

This door was photographed at the Skaill House, not far from Stromness on the west side of the Orkney Islands.  This important 17th century mansion house was originally built for Bishop George Graham in 1620.  It was later the home of William Graham Watt, the 7th Laird of Breckness Estate, who discovered Skara Brae in 1850.  Skara Brae, on the southern shore of the Bay of o’Skaill, is a 5,000 year old Neolithic site uncovered in a storm in 1850 on the grounds of Breckness Estate.  It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
