Buy a House

Buying a new home through MHO is much like purchasing any other home. Stable employment and good credit history are necessary.  Families or individuals with incomes below 80% of the area median income (AMI) can qualify for financing that make their homes even more affordable.

We have several programs to help families achieve the dream of homeownership:

Self-Help Homeownership

Corrie, Treva, Cierra WilliamsMHO’s Self-Help Homeownership program provides families and individuals in Buncombe County with low or moderate income an opportunity to achieve the American Dream of homeownership. Our Self-Help program brings together a group of four to six qualifying families who work together to build their homes under the guidance of an MHO construction supervisor. In addition to low-interest USDA mortgages, the “sweat equity” construction hours put in by the homeowners reduce the cost of their homes.  With the Self-Help program, neighbors work alongside one another to build community from the ground up.

It is labor intensive, but also immensely rewarding.  To read a story and view a video about one of our Self-Help Home Owners, Treva Williams, click on this link.

MHO is currently recruiting families and individuals for the next round of Self-Help Homes in Swannanoa.  For more information and program guidelines, see below. If you or someone you know might be interested in participating in the Self-Help Program, contact Megan Kirby at 254-4030 x122, megan@mtnhousing.org.
