Where the Arts Meet the Environment & Technology
The Glen Rock Depot is a mixed use, community development in Asheville’s River Arts District and historic South French Broad and Livingston neighborhoods. There are currently two buildings on the Glen Rock Depot site: the “Corner Market” which now houses the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas, and the former Glen Rock Hotel, which will be renovated incorporating historic tax credits in 2010. A new, 90,000 sf, LEED certified mixed-use building will be constructed between the two historic buildings in this year.
The Glen Rock Depot will be in the midst of one of the city’s greenway projects. This protected open space for conservation and recreation will provide residents and tenants of the Glen Rock Depot with access to walking and biking paths and spaces to enjoy the beauty of our region.
A Rich History
Around the turn of the century, the Glen Rock Depot, adjacent to the Southern Railways passenger trains, was once the entry point into Asheville. In 1900, the Glen Rock Hotel accommodated 125 guests at about $2.00 per night. Phase I: The Corner Market
Located on the corner of Depot and Bartlett Streets, MHO completed the 6,400 sf “Corner Market” building renovation in September 2007, and it is currently occupied by the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. This building was the old Southern Railway company store and more recently Asheville Packing Company.
Phase II: New Multi-use Building
The LEED certified building will be complete in fall 2010 and will provide 60 affordable apartments on the upper three stories, as well as 9,000 sf of first floor commercial and retail space, and 3,000 sf of community space. The new building will incorporate architectural features of the existing riverfront building types: primarily brick construction with historic features reminiscent of original building types in this area.
The 3,000 sf of community space will include a kitchen area, a bathroom and a large gathering space-all handicapped accessible and available to the entire community.
Phase III: Glen Rock Hotel
The Glen Rock Hotel provides an exciting location with cutting edge technology and amenities for "creative class" businesses: technology companies, architects, land planners, nonprofits, green building enterprises, health and fitness services, and other types of small businesses that will create a space for collaboration and interaction.
Initial historic designation was approved in February 2009 and the 11,000 sf first floor of commercial space is scheduled to be renovated by fall 2009. Upper floors will be completed next year for use as office spaces—available for lease room-by-room or by the hallway or floor— with potential for shared amenities and community space, such as copy machine, printer, office supplies, kitchen, board room, etc. Wireless T3 broadband access will be available throughout the Glen Rock Hotel.
The Glen Rock Hotel will also have a unique interior space, a large interior “light well” or atrium will be finished with small sitting areas, plants and sculpture so that tenants can enjoy a cup of coffee, sit with their laptops, and relax in natural light even in the winter months.
A rooftop terrace deck will be available for tenants and the larger community to have a glass of wine or cup of coffee, enjoy the natural beauty of the area, while watching the trains go by.
The Magnetic Field: Cafe and Performance House
Our anchor tenant in the Glen Rock Hotel, The Magnetic Field, is a café and coffee shop by day and lounge and performance venue by night. The Performance House will host theatre, music, stand-up comedy, performance art and more. The Magnetic Field is a community place where people can come together to perform and create, or experience new and innovative performances.
